Essex County Clerk Genealogy Records

Essex County Land and Deed Records

The Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages preserves property records for all 22 municipalities in Essex County. Hon. Juan M. Rivera, Jr. serves as Register. A copy of every deed and mortgage recorded since 1637 is on file. That is nearly 400 years of land records. The collection totals 17,741 books, not counting electronic recordings. These records are invaluable for genealogy research because they show where ancestors lived, what they owned, and who they dealt with.

The office has a Public Records Electronic Search System (PRESS) at press.essexregister.com. All property transactions from May 1, 2001 to the present are available electronically. Older records can be viewed in the Public Vault during office hours. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Title searches must be done in person at the Register's office in Newark. Records from October 1, 1996 onward can be searched with a maximum 90-day date range.

Historical Society Genealogy Collections

The New Jersey Historical Society is located at 52 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102. Phone is 973-596-8500. It sits right in Essex County and holds one of the largest genealogy collections in the state. The society has been active since 1845, celebrating over 180 years of preserving New Jersey history. Museum admission is $4 per person. Library admission is $7 per person. Members enter free.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The library is open Tuesday through Saturday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. by appointment. The manuscript collection has 1,700 groups and 3,200 linear feet of material. The New Jersey Biographical Card Index contains 75,000 entries. Church records, including baptismal, marriage, and burial records from various denominations, are held here. Military records cover the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War. For Essex County genealogy, this is one of the richest single sources in the area.
