Like all New Jersey municipalities, Jersey City vital records are restricted. They are not public records. Only the person named, close family members, legal representatives, or individuals with a court order can obtain copies. You need valid photo ID and proof of relationship. For genealogy purposes, older records may be available through the New Jersey State Archives in Trenton. The archives hold birth records from 1848 to 1923, marriage records from 1848 to 1948, and death records from 1848 to 1963 on microfilm. These are free to view in person.
The New Jersey Department of Health maintains statewide vital records from 1925 onward. They charge $25 for the first certified copy and $2 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. You can order by mail or in person at their Trenton office.

Their collections include National Archives films, a Hudson County World War II draftees index, city directories, a Hudson County photographers database from the 19th century, and high school yearbooks.
